WVU coach Bob Huggins charged with DUI in Pittsburgh

West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins was arrested for drunk driving Friday night in Pittsburgh.

According to Pittsburgh Police, officers saw Huggins’ SUV blocking traffic in the middle of Merchant Street, off Ridge Avenue around 8:30 p.m.

The SUV had a flat and shredded tire, according to investigators.

After Huggins had difficulty moving the vehicle off the street, officers questioned him and performed field sobriety tests, which he failed.

Court documents say that Huggins said he was watching basketball with his brother at a basketball camp in Sherrodsville, Ohio. When police asked Huggins if he knew where he was he was unable to tell them. Huggins gave officers a receipt from a Burger King in Washington, PA that showed a purchase that had happened at 1:30 p.m. Officers then asked Huggins how he had gotten from Washington to Pittsburgh and he was allegedly unable to tell them.

Police say Huggins stated that he was in “Columbus” several times. Officers asked Huggins around 10 times where he was actually at and say he never responded with the city he was actually in.

Officers say they also found empty beer cans in a white garbage bag on the front passenger floorboard and the trunk of the vehicle. A cooler was located right behind the center console.

Court documents say Huggins was driving a vehicle under a lease through WVU.

Huggins, 69, of Morgantown, was charged with Driving Under the Influence and later released from custody.

West Virginia University and its Athletics Department released the following statement:

“West Virginia University is aware of an incident last night involving Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Huggins, for which he was charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) in the City of Pittsburgh. We are gathering more information and will take appropriate action once the review is complete.”

Last month, Huggins received a suspension and a pay cut after using a homophobic slur in a radio interview.
