Wylie boys basketball comes back to stun Lubbock Monterey; Lady Bulldogs can't pull upset

LUBBOCK - The Wylie boys basketball team trailed by 13 at halftime and seven going into the fourth quarter before mounting a comeback to beat Lubbock Monterey 50-46 on the road Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (15-12 overall, 3-1 district) handed Monterey its first District 4-5A loss. Along with Abilene Cooper falling to Lubbock-Cooper, Wylie moves into a three-way tie for first place in the district standings.

After the first quarter, it was a three-point game, but the Plainsmen (14-11, 3-1) took control of things in the second quarter. Monterey outscored Wylie 18-8 to lead 31-18 at halftime. The Bulldogs pulled closer in the third, and then dominated the fourth quarter for the road win.

Dylan Jennings scored eight of his team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter and Kazion Brown added five of his 10 points in the final frame. Wylie would score 19 points in the final frame to complete the comeback.

Martin Marshall finished with nine points as eight Bulldogs scored at least a point in the victory.

The Plainsmen were led by Aidan Castillo with a game-high 15 points while Azijon Like finished with nine in the loss.

Wylie returns home Friday to wrap up the first round of district play against Lubbock Coronado.

Maroney not enough against No. 20 Lady Plainsmen

At Lubbock, the Wylie girls basketball team held Lubbock Monterey to 13 points below its season average and its second fewest points, but couldn't pull off upset in a 55-48 loss.

Indiah Maroney scored a game-high 22 points and Caroline Steadman finished with 15 to lead the Lady Bulldogs. They held Aaliyah Chavez to 13 points and Kelly Mora scored 19 to lead 20th-ranked Monterey.

Wylie (12-16, 2-4) got off to a fast start to lead 18-7 after the first quarter and took a 31-27 lead into halftime. But the Lady Bulldogs managed only three points in the third quarter as the Lady Plainsmen (24-7, 5-1) took control of the game and held on to win.

On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs come home to host Lubbock Coronado.
