Wylie ISD board: Four election newcomers seek 2 open seats

Two new faces will join the seven-member Wylie ISD board in just a few weeks.

Three seats on the board are up for election, with only incumbent Brad Hill assured of a seat. He is unopposed for the Place 4 seat.

Vying for Place 1 are Jud Beall and Laura Donaway.

Beall is a Wylie High grad while Donaway is a retired longtime teacher in the district.

They are seeking to fill the unexpired term of Chris McCurley, who stepped aside last summer. Former board member Stephen Lowry had filled in.

Seeking the Place 5 seat are Blaise Herberg and Megan Stephenson.

Herberg is in local business while Stephenson is in the medical field.

The seat is open because longtime board members and former president Steve Keenum is ending his service.

There is not a major issue separating the candidates, who have ties in some way to the district - student, teacher or having children in school at some point.

Some have said having children currently in school is important, as well as having former educators in discussions.

All want to see the district continue to excel, praising its past, yet would like to be a part of the decision-making on how to address growth. There has been discussion as to whether a second high school should be built. Wylie, once a country school outside of Abilene proper, now is Class 5A and competing with the two Abilene ISD high schools in athletic and other extracurricular events such as band.

A separate task force has been formed to study high school options.
