Wyoming voter registration guide: How to check voter registration status and options to vote

Wyoming has a few elections coming up in 2024: A primary election held over the summer and the general election in November.

The state's primary election is scheduled for Aug. 20, 2024, which will determine each qualified party's nomination of candidates for federal offices, as well as state and county offices.

Party candidates who win the primaries qualify to appear on the General Election ballot in November.

It can be difficult to remember if you're registered to vote, or figuring out how to register for the first time. Here's what you should know about voting in Wyoming in 2024.

How to register to vote in Wyoming

In order to be eligible to register to vote in Wyoming, you must be 18 years old on Election Day, be a U.S. citizen and be a resident of Wyoming and in the precinct where you register.

You can visit your county clerk's website to find locations in your county to register in person.

If you can't register in person, Wyoming allows voter registration by mail, where you will need to send in a completed Wyoming voter registration application, which must be notarized before mailing, and a copy of acceptable identification.

To register, you will have to provide your valid Wyoming driver's license. If you don't have your current valid driver's license with you, you must provide the driver's license number, last four digits of your social security number and an additional acceptable identification, which includes:

  • U.S. Passport

  • Driver's license or Identification Card

  • Tribal ID

  • Photo identification card from the University of Wyoming, a Wyoming Community College or a Wyoming Public School

  • U.S. Military Card or an identification card issued to a dependent member of the U.S. military.

If you don't have a driver's license, you must provide a statement saying that on the voter registration application, the last four digits of your Social Security number and an additional acceptable form of identification, listed above.

As of July 2023, Wyoming is allowing people who were convicted as a first-time, non-violent felon to have their right to vote restored.

What are the voter registration deadlines in Wyoming in 2024?

Voter registration for the Aug. 20, 2024 primary election closes on Aug. 5.

Voter registration for the general election closes Oct. 21, 2024.

If you wish to change your party affiliation before the primary election, the deadline to change is May 15, 2024. New voters registering after that deadline can still declare a party affiliation.

How to vote in Wyoming

The state of Wyoming offers a couple of options for those looking to vote. Let's break them down.

Request a mail-in/absentee ballot

There are a few different deadlines for absentee voters in Wyoming for both the primary and the general elections in 2024. In Wyoming, absentee ballots can be requested any time in 2024 prior to the day of the election.

To request an absentee ballot, you can either call, mail or email an application or visit your county clerk in-person. You can also fill out a request online.

Here's when you can submit an absentee ballot:

  • Primary election: July 23-Aug. 19, 2024

  • Primary election for military and overseas voters: July 5-Aug. 19, 2024

  • General election: Oct. 8-Nov. 4, 2024

  • General election for military and overseas voters: Sept. 20-Nov. 4, 2024.

Returning your completed ballot

Completed absentee ballots can be returned in a signed envelope, or mailed to your county clerk's office. The Wyoming Secretary of State notes that mail delivery within the U.S. may take up to seven days, and could be even longer if you're mailing it from outside the country.

Rock the Vote recommends contacting your local election official if you need more information.

All absentee ballots must be received in the county clerk's office no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day, and any ballots that arrive after the deadline will not be counted.

Voting in-person on Election Day

The polls in Wyoming are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., or until the last person in line at 7 p.m. has voted for both the primary and general elections.

You can find your local polling place using the state's polling place locator, or by contacting your county clerk's office.

In order to vote, you'll need to show an acceptable form of identification. Wyoming says these forms of ID will work:

  • Wyoming driver's license or ID card

  • Tribal ID card

  • U.S. Passport

  • U.S. Military card

  • Driver's license or ID from another state

  • University of Wyoming student ID

  • Wyoming Community College student ID

  • Wyoming Public School student ID

  • Valid Medicare or Medicaid insurance card (Note: These will not be acceptable for voting after Dec. 31, 2029.)
