Wyomissing's season ends with loss to North Catholic in PIAA Class 4A girls basketball quarterfinal

Mar. 18—WINGATE — One of Wyomissing's deepest postseason runs in program history came to an end on Saturday.

The Spartans lost to North Catholic 60-27 in the PIAA Class 4A girls basketball quarterfinals at Bald Eagle Area High School.

"It just wasn't our day," Wyomissing coach Aaron Anders said. "That's a very, very good team. They were hitting the shots right from the start. We weren't."

The Spartans could not contain the Trojanettes' high-flying offense, which made 10 3-pointers. Half of North Catholic's made field goals were from beyond the arc.

The District 7 champion Trojanettes were led by junior Alayna Rocco, a Harvard commit, who scored 19 points. Seniors Tori Drevna and Dacia Lewandowski, an Akron commit, each had 16 points.

"They didn't miss a shot," Anders said. "We were there. We were on them."

The Trojanettes (25-3) started the game with an 18-4 run and never looked back, leading by double digits the rest of the way. North Catholic led 44-15 at the half and 57-19 after three quarters.

"They disrupted us on defense, and we did not disrupt them on defense," Anders said. "That's the difference in the first quarter in my opinion."

Wyomissing (28-3) was unable to settle in on offense, as the Trojanettes' stingy defense prevented open looks. Sophomore Amaya Stewart led the Spartans with 10 points.

"We still played with all the heart that we typically do," Wyomissing senior Lexi Loeb said. "That's all we could do today."

Loeb was one of three Spartans seniors who concluded their high school careers on Saturday, along with teammates Maddie Campbell and Kaitlyn Brunner. All three were honored with curtain calls and standing ovations late in the fourth quarter as they walked off the floor for the final time.

"The seniors are the ones that have created the culture," Anders said. "I'm just really proud of them."

The seniors helped lead Wyomissing to a historic season The Spartans won the first county title in program history in February and the District 3 Class 4A championship earlier this month, their first district title. Wyomissing qualified for the state playoffs for the first time since 2018, and reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 2004.

"We have had each other's backs the entire season," Loeb said. "It means the world to be able to do it during my senior year and to be able to do it with these girls."

While the team was rich with skill and athleticism, Anders said it was Wyomissing's chemistry that set the 2023 Spartans apart from squads of the past.

"When you can get a team believing in each other and really caring about one another, and loving one another, you can get so much out of them," Anders said. "We got a lot out of this group."

And it is that team bond that will be cherished forever, according to the seniors.

"It was great, because of how close we were on and off the court," Campbell said. "It means a lot."
