The X Factor 2009 alumni Lloyd Daniels has alleged that he was forced to hide his sexuality while appearing on the ITV singing competition.

The singer took part in Twitter's 'how it started/how it's going' trend, when people post before and after photos, although his was slightly different.

For his 'how it's going' photo, he shared a photo of himself with his other half, alongside a photo of himself after his X Factor makeover for the live shows, labelling it 'how it was when I wasn't aloud [sic] to come out".

The 2009 series of the show was notable for a controversial moment in which Dannii Minogue referred to tabloid speculation about Danyl Johnson's sexuality live on air. She apologised after the moment received complaints to broadcast regulator Ofcom.

Multiple X Factor contestants have come out as LGBTQ+ after their time on the show has finished, with Honey G stating that she was shy and worried about potential homophobia, while Chris Maloney stated that "with the show it was always an inappropriate time or people just asked inappropriate questions", but noted that Rylan Clark-Neal and Union J's Jaymi Hensley were out on the same series.
