X Release Alphabetland , First New Album in 35 Years: Listen

X have returned with Alphabetland, the Los Angeles punk band’s first album in 35 years with their original lineup. The group (Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake) recorded the LP with producer Rob Schnapf. It is their first album since 1993’s hey Zeus! and the first time this lineup has made new music together since 1985’s Ain’t Love Grand. Listen to Alphabetland below (via Fat Possum).

Originally scheduled for release in August, the band pushed Alphabetland’s release ahead due to the COVID-19 crisis. “Let’s give people—at least our audience and maybe beyond that — something that is upbeat,” John Doe said in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times’ Randall Roberts. “Something that’s new and vital.”

Last year, X reissued their first four albums on vinyl and teamed up with Violent Femmes for a co-headlining tour. Read Pitchfork’s review of the reissue of X’s debut Los Angeles, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this Sunday (April 26).
