Xbox series X stock - live: Could Game and Argos restock consoles today?
The Xbox series X is still incredibly difficult to find in stock online, despite launching almost a year ago in November 2020. Delays in the manufacturing process coupled with a worldwide shortage of microchips have brought production of Microsoft’s next-generation console to a juddering halt.
While it’s easier to find the cheaper but less powerful Xbox series S in stock, the more powerful Xbox series X sells out as quickly as new stock appears. Knowing when the Xbox will be restocked is key to grabbing one before everybody else does.

It has been well over a month now since Currys last had any Xbox series X consoles in stock. That restock happened on 7 September, kicking off at 8:55am and running for just one hour. After no fewer than three restocks in August, September turned out to be a very quiet month for the tech retailer, and so far October is going a similar way.
We’re yet to see any Xbox series X stock from Currys this month, but like other retailers there is plenty of Xbox series S stock to go around.
How big is the Xbox series X?

If you’re planning to buy an Xbox series X then you might want to know its dimensions. After all, some next-generation consoles (like the series X and especially the PS5) are pretty big, and might not fit wherever your current console resides.
The Xbox series X can be sat upright or laid down. Stood up, it is 30.1cm tall, 15.1cm wide and 15.1cm deep. It weighs 4.45kg. If you are interested in the slimmer, cheaper and less powerful Xbox series S instead, that console is 27.5cm tall, 6.5cm wide and 15.1cm deep when stood up on its end. It weighs much less than the series X, at 1.93kg.

While we wait (and wait, and wait some more) for the next Xbox series X restock, allow us to draw your attention to our review of the brand new Nintendo Switch OLED. What’s the difference between Xbox series X and series S?

It’s been another slow week for Xbox series X restocks, so let us take a moment to remind you all of the differences between the flagship console and its cheaper sibling, the Xbox series S. Apart from the latter being in stock, of course.
All Xbox games old and new run on both consoles, though on the less powerful Xbox series S the overall graphics quality will be dialled down. The Xbox series S does not have a disc drive, has half the storage capacity of the X (512GB compared to 1TB) and can only play downloaded games. The Xbox series S is much easier to find in stock than the series X. It’s also cheaper and costs just £249 (Amazon.co.uk).

Can you buy Xbox series X from Amazon?

Even retail giant Amazon is struggling to secure any Xbox series X stock. The website currently shows the console as unavailable, adding: “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.”
Amazon hasn’t had any Xbox series X stock in October, and last month only had the consoles on 9 and 20 September. Before that, we saw a couple of restocks on Amazon’s French and German sites in August, and two further restocks in the UK in June and July respectively.
Meanwhile, the Xbox series S is in stock at Amazon and can be bought with next-day delivery for its regular retail price of £249.
What is Xbox All Access?

If you’d rather pay for your Xbox in monthly installments, then Xbox All Access might be for you. Set up by Microsoft and offered through Game and Smyths Toys (when stock is actually available, of course), All Access includes the console and Game Pass Ultimate.
There’s no upfront cost and the Xbox series X costs £28.99 a month for 24 months. The less powerful (more far more readily available) Xbox series S is £20.99 a month for 24 months. No physical games are included, but access to Game Pass Ultimate means you can play a catalogue of over 100 games from the cloud, on your Xbox or PC.
Can you buy an Xbox series X on the high street?

In theory, yes you can. But stock in physical stores is also very hard to track down at the moment. Both Smyths and Game occasionally have Xbox stock in-store, with the latter adding individual consoles to its website when they are available to buy in person. The site currently shows zero stock right across the UK (no surprise there then), but we have seen the odd console appear there before. So it’s worth checking the site regularly, and calling into your local store if you can.
Game doesn’t list in-store stock online, but the Twitter accounts for its shops are fairly active, tweeting when console stock is available. There’s also a Twitter list, so you can keep an eye on the tweets of every Game store across the UK in one place. Good luck!
Will Smyths Toys have an Xbox restock this month?

Yes! At least, that’s what the retailer’s website currently says. There isn’t an exact date just yet, but the Xbox series X listing on the Smyths website says stock is expected in October. Smyths last had an Xbox restock, albeit via Xbox All Access, on 24 September, so the next drop could also be towards the end of the month.

Will Game have a restock this week?

Game last had an Xbox series X restock on 8 and 24 September, but these both offered the console through Microsoft’s Xbox All Access programme, which breaks down the cost into 24 monthly payments and includes Game Pass Ultimate.
Before this, Game had a couple of restocks for the Halo Infinite edition of the Xbox series X, on 25 and 26 August. Now, it looks like a bunch of new Halo bundles will arrive next month, with Game’s website stating a release date of 15 November, which is when Halo Infinite is released.
We’re hoping for a restock of the regular Xbox series X before then, and potentially before the end of the month.
Will Very have an Xbox restock this week?

We began the week hopeful that Very would have an Xbox restock. But so far those hopes are yet to become reality. Since the retailer always restocks on Tuesdays, we now have our eyes on next Tuesday, 19 October. These restocks tend to happen between four and five weeks apart, and with the last one happening at Very on 14 September, now four weeks ago, next week looks even more likely.

This morning we had what appeared to be a restock at Asda, but which turned out to be a wild goose chase for countless disappointed customers. One liveblog reader successfully ordered the console for click and collect, only to be told once reaching the store that there was no available stock.
Others have had their orders for home delivery cancelled and refunded, which suggests there’s been an embarrassing SNAFU on the retailer’s webpage.
We’ll keep investigating, and will bring you word of any actual restocks as they happen.

When will Smyths Toys restock the Xbox?

It’s sold out right now, but Smyths Toys is one of three retailers to sell Microsoft’s console through the Xbox All Access programme, the pay-as-you-go alternative to ponying up £449 for the Xbox series X up front.
The retailer last stocked the Xbox All Access scheme on 24 September and last had any stock of the Xbox series X itself on 9 September.
Those previous restocking patterns suggest another restock at Smyths nearer to the end of October, but potentially as soon as next week.
The 20th anniversary Xbox controller is sold out

Last week Xbox revealed a new limited edition controller to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the original Xbox.
The special edition Xbox wireless controller (£59.99, Xbox.com) resembles the original Xbox debug kit in translucent black and the 2001 console’s original green flash, which looks even more green than we remember.
Unsurprisingly, pre-orders sold out in less than a day, though the pad frequently appears back in stock at the Microsoft Store.
The controller launches alongside a matching Xbox headset on 15 November.
Asda is cancelling Xbox orders

It seems many customers are being refunded and told their Xbox orders have been cancelled, so check your inbox for any updates.
Customers who ordered to collect the Xbox in store at Asda are finding there’s no console available when they arrive, but are being advised to reorder the console for home delivery instead.

Differences between the Xbox series X and series S

There are two next-gen Xboxes: the less powerful Xbox series S and the more advanced Xbox series X.
They both run the same next-gen games (as well as older Xbox games through backwards compatibility), but the cheaper Xbox series S has less processing power and storage space. This means graphics won’t look as detailed and performance may be a little slower, and you’ll have to use an external hard drive or delete and redownload games to make space.
For that reason, the Xbox series X is considered to be the “true” next-generation console here – but both consoles are excellent games machines. The Xbox series S has another big advantage in that it’s much easier to find in stock than the Xbox series X.
The Xbox series S costs £249 (Amazon.co.uk), which looks positively bargainous compared to the Xbox series X at £449.
Could AO restock the Xbox series X on Friday?

AO is currently sold out of the Xbox series X, but last restocked the console on 17 September as part of a bundle costing £614. The bundle included a charging dock, extra controller and wireless gaming headset. And an Xbox series X too, of course.
The longest this retailer has ever gone without restocking is 29 days. We’re now at 26 days since AO’s last restock – which leads us to speculate that AO could restock the Xbox as early as Friday. We’re poised to pounce.
Bundles tend to stay in stock longer as they’re slightly more expensive and less appealing to scalpers, as the bundled accessories eat into their potential profit.
Is the Xbox stock situation getting better or worse?

Here at IndyBest, we’ve been tracking the availability of the Xbox series X stock for months. So are things getting better or worse for shoppers on the hunt for Microsoft’s new console?
We’re certainly in a lull at the moment, following a relatively busy September for restocks, but we’ve noticed that new Xbox stock tends to come in waves. Supply becomes pent up somewhere in the manufacturing process, then once things become unstuck consoles are released to retailers over the course of a few weeks.
Retailers are also getting better at managing what little Xbox stock they receive. Game’s last major restock was in store only and couldn’t be found online, and sites like AO bundle the console with accessories to cut into the scalpers’ profit margins.
We’re confident we’re about to see a new wave of consoles wash over the UK soon, so stick with us to catch one when it does.
What’s happening with Amazon’s Xbox stock?

Amazon is heavily tipped to restock the PlayStation 5 today, and is currently sold out of the Xbox series X.
In recent weeks the retailer has restocked Microsoft’s new console in mainland Europe, but before you hit that achetez maintenant button, you might want to consider some of the hidden costs first.
Importing electronics from the EU incurs all manner of taxes, delivery charges and fees. Because of the additional paperwork required, many courier services have hiked up their prices too. You can expect to pay at least £100 extra to buy an Xbox this way.
If you don’t mind lower graphics settings and want to start playing next-gen games right now, Amazon has the less powerful Xbox series S in stock (£249, Amazon.co.uk) .
Will Very’s predicted restock happen today?

Very was forecast to restock the Xbox series X either yesterday or today. We can say with some certainty that the retailer didn’t restock the console yesterday, which narrows the window to today – if this prediction holds any water.
It’s been an entire month since Very last had the Xbox in stock. The retailer rarely goes longer than this without dropping consoles.
Our stock tracking sensors are trained on Very and we’ll alert you the instant we spot something.
Asda Xbox restock could be as soon as this morning

The Xbox series X could be available at Asda this morning.
The supermarket claims the console is available until you create an account, log in and select a delivery slot, at which point the Xbox series X is correctly listed as out of stock. Boo.
But curiously, Asda mentions Xbox All Access in its product listing. Xbox All Access is the pay monthly alternative to buying the console for £449 upfront, though so far the scheme is only available at three of Microsoft’s retail partners.

Xbox refunds follow last night’s Microsoft Store restock

Late last night, breaking a dry spell that had lasted a week and a half, the Xbox series X was restocked at the official Microsoft Store. The console is now sold out.
Better yet, the retailer was selling pre-orders of the Halo Infinite limited edition bundle, which launches 15 November and is emblazoned with Master Chief iconography and comes with an exclusive branded controller.
Pre-orders sold out in two minutes, with some shoppers complaining that orders they’d successfully placed where being refunded and cancelled by Microsoft. The volume of orders seemingly outpaced the number of available consoles.

You can play Xbox games on your laptop

For £10.99 per month, anyone can play a selection of Xbox series X games in a browser window using Microsoft’s cloud streaming service.
You don’t need a gaming laptop or even a halfway powerful device, just a fast enough internet connection, a Game Pass Ultimate subscription (£32.99, Argos.co.uk), and an Xbox wireless controller (£54.99, Game.co.uk), ideally.
Game Pass is a Netflix-style games-on-demand service that unlocks a rolling library of more than 100 games. Most can be downloaded, but some can be streamed live to a smartphone, tablet or laptop browser window.

As fans clamour to get their hands on the most advanced member of the Xbox family, demand for the less powerful Xbox series S is much smaller and so the console is easy to find in stock pretty much everywhere.
The Xbox series S is a brilliant games machine however, and a viable alternative to the sold out Xbox series X. The console is backwards compatible and runs the same next-generation Xbox games, but with some of the fancier graphics options dialled down. It doesn’t have a disc drive, so you can only play downloaded games. The hard drive is also half as big.

Which retailers have restocked in October?

Our rolling retailer analysis could lead you to think that the Xbox series X hasn’t been spotted on the shelves in weeks, but it really is out there.
On Tuesday last week, John Lewis & Partners briefly restocked the console on its mobile app. And the day before that, BT invited its customers to order one of an allocation of 50 Xbox series X consoles it received.

Could AO restock the Xbox series X today?

Like so many other retailers this week, AO is now powerfully overdue an Xbox restock.
The store last had the Xbox series X available on 17 September, almost a month ago, when it was sold as part of a bundle including a gaming headset, a controller and a dual charging dock, and costing north of £600.
In the past we’ve heard of secret in-person restocks at AO’s five brick-and-mortar stores around the country, which weren’t made available for online shoppers. If you’re passing by an AO warehouse, it wouldn’t hurt to pop your head in and enquire.
How to buy an Xbox series X online

It’s all quiet on the Xbox front this morning, so let’s go over some things you can do right now to be ready when the next restock happens.
Register an account at each of the retailers that stock the Xbox series X. They’re listed in the main article above.
Ensure your correct payment details are saved in your browser on desktop, or on Google Pay or Apple Pay on your phone.
Are you a BT customer, or know somebody who is? Register your interest on the BT site to get exclusive access to BT’s next drop.
Sign up for a 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, in case the retailer makes its next Xbox drop a Prime-exclusive.
Download each retailer’s app (if they have one) and add the Xbox series X to your wish list or “save for later” list.
When the console drops, use the link in your wish list to add the Xbox to your trolley or basket – this usually has a higher success rate than navigating through the website.
Keep note of the prices of bundles to ensure you’re getting a good deal. Rounding up, the console itself is £450, controllers are £50, the official headset is £90, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs £11 per month. Newly released game are £60, but retailers usually bundle older games with the console.
The pay-as-you-go Xbox All Access programme is good value for money, so long as you don’t already have a Game Pass subscription.
Don’t buy a console on social media, these are always scams.

It could happen, but it would be the first time Game went for the double whammy. While it’s true that Very likes to restock both consoles at the same time, the same can’t be said for Game.
The retailer is one of three places you can buy the Xbox through the Xbox All Access scheme, the pay-monthly alternative to paying £449 for the console in one go. Since the beginning of September, Game has prioritised restocking the Xbox All Access programme rather than the standalone console.

When will Asda restock the Xbox series X?

Asda restocks are few and far between, cropping up about as often as Halley’s Comet or a New York Jets win.
We actually spotted the Xbox series X in stock at Asda as recently as 27 September, breaking a achingly long stockless spell that had lasted a full three months. The console is sold out now, of course, but this tiny drop proved that the retailer is still in the game and making plays.

The Xbox series X is sold out everywhere.
Argos simulates the experience of finding the Xbox series X in stock by letting you add the console to your trolley before denying you any delivery or collection options. If you ever want to get a feel for what it might be like to buy an Xbox one day, feel free to head to the Argos page and just pop that bad boy in your trolley over and over again.
We’ve heard rumours of some in-store restocks happening at stores around the country, but it’s been months since the retailer last had any stock on the site as normal.
The best way to buy an Xbox series X from Argos is through the app. Add the console to your wish list, which lets you slip the Xbox into your basket in advance for a speedy checkout when the time comes.

Five long weeks have passed since Currys last had the Xbox series X in stock. Like Very, this is officially the longest Currys has ever gone without selling Microsoft’s console.
We’re in uncharted territory, but this long dry spell means the electronics is primed for a restock any day now. We’re here and ready to catch it when it happens.
Very could restock the Xbox today

We’re paying close attention to Very this morning.
The retailer had been heavily rumoured to restock the Xbox series X last week, but coasted right past its supposed restock dates without so much as a “how do you do”.
It’s been a month since Very last had the Xbox in stock. The retailer rarely goes this long without selling the console, but then again, most stores are breaking records for their longest stretch of time between restocks. The console is scarce, to say the least.
We’ll alert you as soon as Very makes its move.

Let’s start looking a few retailers we think could restock the Xbox series X this morning.
Amazon last restocked the Xbox three weeks ago, and lately has changed its product listing to remove the usual “this item is out of stock” notice. This is probably because a third-party reseller is on there trying to flog the Xbox series X to desperate shoppers for £350 more than its retail price.
When the Xbox is restocked at Amazon, it sells out even faster than usual. The retailer is a top target for automated bots and other supernaturally quick buyers.
