Xiaomi dealt 'heavy blow' in Q1

STORY: Xiaomi reported a fall in first-quarter revenue on Thursday (May 19).

The Chinese smartphone maker said a number of factors had dealt a 'heavy blow' to its business.

That included a resurgence of the global health crisis, lockdowns in China and headwinds from fighting in Ukraine.

It also faced a shortage of components.

Revenue in the quarter ended March fell to just under $11 billion, down from a year before and below analyst forecasts.

The company confirmed smartphone shipments fell 22% to 38.5 million units in the quarter.

Its total loss for the period came in at around $79 million, while last year saw over a $1 billion profit.

Xiaomi makes most of its revenue selling mobile handsets.

Nikkei reported Wednesday that Xiaomi and its rivals Vivo and Oppo had told suppliers to cut back orders for the next few quarters by more than a fifth.

That was due to lockdowns and supply-chain issues.

The company also said the months-long Shanghai lockdown and the conflict in Ukraine would weigh on revenues in the second quarter.
