YAIAA field hockey: Coaches announce division players of the year, all-stars
Field hockey season is over for teams in the York-Adams league.
New Oxford was the lone team standing after the first day of District 3 competition, when YAIAA teams were outscored 44-2. Central York and Red Lion were the only teams to score in games against teams from outside the league.
The Colonials advanced to the Class 2A second round with a 1-0 road win over previously unbeaten Susquehannock. They lost to Twin Valley 1-0, and then lost to Manheim Central in the consolation round.
All that's remaining is to hand out the awards and celebrate the seniors with the senior all-star game on Nov. 7.
YAIAA coaches have selected the top players for each division, and announced the the teams for the all-star game.
Seniors Kara Hazelton of Central York and Gabrielle Etter of Spring Grove shared player of the year honors in Division I. Susquehannock junior Lilly Wojcik repeated as player of the year in Division II. Division III coaches selected Melanie Beall from Bermudian Springs as their top player.

Hazelton led a Central York defense that gave up just 13 goals against YAIAA teams and 47 goals overall in 21 games. She was responsible for 14 defensive saves and scored two goals. She is described by coaches as an "all-around amazing player who skillfully makes her way through double and triple teams and is never disrespectful."
Etter scored six goals and added eight assists from her spot at center midfield. She led a Rockets team that had losing records the previous two seasons to a winning season and a spot in the district playoffs. Division coaches say she is "hardworking, respectful and bright."
Wojcik, who led her division in scoring last year, led the league this season with 46 goals and five assists for 97 points. The junior, who has committed to play at Princeton, led an offense that outscored the opposition 104-13. She scored in every game of the regular season, when she had multiple goals every game but one.
Beall repeated as the division's top player after scoring 33 goals and handing out 10 assists. She was slightly off last year's season of 38 goals, but finishes her high school career with 225 points. That scoring is obtained by awarding two points for each goal and one point for each assist.
