Yankees' LeMahieu out with groin injury

New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu missed Saturday's game against the Red Sox in Boston due to a groin injury.

LeMahieu underwent an MRI exam on Saturday, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters after the game that the All-Star has a low-grade strain.

The American League batting leader suffered the injury during Friday's loss to Boston.

Boone said before the game it is possible LeMahieu could need a stint on the 10-day injured list. However, after the game, Boone said LeMahieu might be able to play in Sunday's contest off the bench.

"We think it is something that he could possibly play through," Boone said. "It is something that we are going to continue to chew on, see where he's at tomorrow."

LeMahieu added that he does not think the injury is worthy of an IL stint.

LeMahieu, 31, is batting .332 with 15 homers and 71 RBIs in 95 games in his first season with New York. The RBI total is a career best and the homer count matches his career high, set last season.

LeMahieu led the major leagues in batting with a .348 average in 2016 when he was a member of the Colorado Rockies.
