Yankees set MLB record with 28th straight game with a home run

It didn’t take very long for the New York Yankees to make home run history on Tuesday.

Thanks to a leadoff home run from second baseman DJ LeMahieu, the Yankees broke an MLB record by homering in 28 straight games. The record-setting homer wrapped just around the foul pole.

Aaron Judge provided an exclamation point to the beginning of the game by hitting an opposite-field shot for back-to-back homers.

The Yankees’ streak broke the previous record of 27 by the 2002 Texas Rangers, a team that featured Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan Rodriguez in the middle of its lineup.

This is the second year in a row the Yankees have made homer history, as the team hit 267 homers last year to set the single-season record. With 131 homers through 79 games this year, the team is on pace to break that record with 269.

The most impressive part about the Yankees’ home run streak might actually be who wasn’t involved, at least from the start. When the streak began on May 26, both Judge and slugger Giancarlo Stanton were on the injured list, and didn’t return until last week. Stanton has only posted one homer since returning, and Judge’s homer on Tuesday was his first since April.

In that time, Gary Sanchez has taken over the team lead in home runs, with names like Luke Voit, Gio Urshela, LeMahieu and the now-demoted Clint Frazier right behind him. In that time, the Yankees carved out a five-game lead in the AL East entering Tuesday.

Unfortunately, Tuesday’s history might have come with a step back, as Stanton exited the game in the fourth inning with an apparent injury.
