Yankees' Severino (lat strain) shut down for six weeks

New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino has a Grade 2 lat strain, and he won't throw a baseball for six weeks, the team announced Wednesday night.

The diagnosis came after an MRI.

The Yankees said it is a new injury that has popped up since Severino began a long-toss regimen as part of his rehabilitation from a shoulder injury.

Manager Aaron Boone told reporters Monday that Severino "didn't feel great" after a long-toss session.

The 25-year-old right-hander was diagnosed with inflammation of the rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder during spring training and was expected to miss the first month of the season.

In 2018, Severino finished 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA and struck out 220 batters in 191 1/3 innings.

A two-time All-Star, Severino signed a four-year, $40 million contract extension in February.
