Yara Shahidi Wears Pyer Moss “Stop Calling 911" T-Shirt in Los Angeles

“Stop calling 911 on the culture.”

Yara Shahidi continues to prove her status as the woke icon we all need. Over the weekend, the actress and Harvard freshman attended a Lakers basketball game in Los Angeles with her brother Sayeed Shahidi. She shared a few sibling snapshots on Instagram, but it was her wardrobe that got people talking. Yara wore a T-shirt with the phrase “Stop calling 911 on the culture” printed on the front, and captioned her post with a matching hashtag as well.

The shirt, from the spring 2019 Pyer Moss collection, made waves when it went down the runway during New York Fashion Week in September. Why? Because designer Kerby Jean-Raymond used fashion to convey a message that many black Americans can relate to, especially in recent months. Whether it’s sitting at Starbucks to enjoying a barbecue to, well, merely existing in any public space, black people in this country literally cannot live their lives due to rampant policing of their everyday activities by racist white people masquerading as “concerned” citizens.

“Stop calling 911 on the culture” highlights exactly how uneasy black Americans feel — and have felt for years — just going about their daily lives in a society that labels them guilty until proven innocent. Many people responded to Yara’s post, specifically asking about the shirt and where they could get it. One Insta user commented, “‘Stop calling 911 on the Culture’.. I Stan” complete with a goat emoji. Another wrote, “Definitely need that shirt though.” Someone summed it up pretty well and said, “Yes! That shirt rocks! they need to STOP CALLING 911 for real. It's getting ridiculous!!”

Props to Yara for always dropping truth bombs and for using her personal style to shine the spotlight on topics that we all need to be discussing. If you want to add the “Stop calling 911 on the culture” shirt to your own closet, it retails for $125 and you can buy it on the Pyer Moss website.
