Yarmouth police officer Sean Ryan in 'good condition' after SUV hit him on Route 28

WEST YARMOUTH − A 12-year Yarmouth police officer sustained multiple injuries after he was struck by an SUV while directing traffic around 10:56 a.m. on Tuesday.

Traffic officer Sean Ryan is in "good condition" at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, according to the police department in a Facebook post. The vehicle's operator was a 76-year-old man from West Yarmouth, who remained on the scene and was questioned by investigators.

The 76-year-old driver was cited for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and mark lanes violations, according to police. His driver's license has also been suspended, after a request for immediate threat license suspension was filed with the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Ryan was hit on Route 28 while directing traffic across from the Sunbird Cape Cod Resort at 216 Route 28. He was in the roadway "wearing high-visibility clothing," according to police, and was alert when taken to the hospital.

Ryan also serves as a full-time public safety dispatcher. Yarmouth traffic safety officers are trained and certified to work traffic details, according to police.
