Russian dictator Vladimir Putin must receive a clear signal that he does not have even the slightest chance of winning the war against Ukraine, former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said at the Dec. 15 online Kyiv Security Forum (KSF) on the prospects of Western assistance to protect Ukraine from Russian aggression.

"The best thing is not just to talk about it, but to make the necessary decisions for Ukraine,” Yatsenyuk said.

“This is what is needed to provide Ukraine with financial assistance, as well as lethal weapons and ammunition for the Ukrainian army.”

Putin is fighting a war of attrition. "He wants to wait us out, exhaust us, and outsmart the free world. He thinks he can win."

"This is not just about compensating for the damage Russia has done to Ukraine. It's about establishing justice. The Putin regime easily circumvents sanctions, and this is a very bad sign. We need to convince everyone that the sanctions regime must be effective.”

"I hope that in 2024 the most important decisions will be made in Washington, at the NATO summit. Ukraine should receive an invitation to join the alliance and be able to defend the country under Article 5 of the treaty."

The KSF, founded by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation, is the country’s leading international platform for discussing national and global security issues.

Andrius Kubilius, the European Parliament Member and former Lithuanian PM, Ambassador Michael McFaul, Director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University, and Professor Philip Zelikow, former advisor to the U.S. Department of State Philip Zelikow, joined the this year's online discussion on Western support.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has no genuine intention to negotiate an end to the war against Ukraine before the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul said at the Kyiv Security Forum on Dec. 15.
