New Year's Day is Sunday. How some offices are observing the holiday

Because New Year's falls on Sunday, many governmental agencies will be taking Monday, Jan. 2, as a holiday.

That includes federal offices and courts, state of Illinois offices, Sangamon County offices and courts, city of Springfield offices and Springfield Park District offices.

Lincoln Library is closed on Sunday and Monday.

There is no U.S. Postal Service delivery on Monday.

The family-friendly First Night Celebration will take place at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, 420 S. Sixth St., from 1 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday. A fireworks display goes off at Fourth Street and Capitol Avenue at 8:15 p.m. A Noon Year's Eve takes place at the Kidzeum of Health and Science, 412 E. Adams St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Schools

School District 186 is already out on its Winter Break.

Classes resume on Wednesday.

Tuesday is a teacher institute day. The board of education will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The University of Illinois Springfield and Lincoln Land Community College are on winter break. UIS starts its spring semester Jan. 17 while classes resume at LLCC on Jan. 7. Midwest Technical Institute in Springfield resumes classes Tuesday.

Sangamon Mass Transit District buses do not run on Monday. Administrative offices close at noon on Friday and re-open Tuesday.

Tourist sites

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site are closed Sunday but open on Monday.
