New Year's Eve shooting kills 3, injures 4 others in Mississippi, police say; investigation ongoing

At least three men are dead and several people are injured after shots rang out right before midnight on New Year's Eve in Gulfport, Mississippi, authorities say.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer said three people were killed and four were injured during the shooting with one in critical condition Saturday.

The Gulfport Police Department received a report at 11:58 p.m. Friday of a shooting, according to a department news release.

The initial investigation by police revealed a physical fight started during an outdoor party and escalated to multiple people firing shots. Two men and a woman were also injured with non-life threatening injuries during the incident.

Police said at least 50 shots were fired by multiple guns, but several involved were not talking to officers. Officers estimated dozens of people were present, with many running away when officers arrived.

Gulfport Police Chief Chris Ryle said it wasn't clear what started the fight at a news conference.

“Guns, drugs, alcohol – it’s a recipe for disaster,” Ryle said.

Switzer said the three men were transported to two local hospitals just down the road from the incident where they were pronounced dead. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

“Somebody out there last night saw something with that many people,” Ryle said at the news conference. “When an assault rifle comes out, somebody knows who they are and we need them to come forward.”

The victims were identified as Corey Dubose, 23, of D’Iberville; Sedrick McCord, 28, of Gulfport; and Aubrey Lewis, 22, of Bay St. Louis.
