Yellowjackets report: Soccer teams knocked out of NCAAs

Nov. 14—Wisconsin-Superior took third-ranked Washington University of St. Louis to the limit, but a late winner for the Bears ensured the favorites advanced 1-0 from an NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament first-round game in Chicago on Saturday.

Owen Culver delivered the Washington goal in the 75th minute. After a first half decidedly favoring WashU, with shot attempts 13-2 in their favor, the Yellowjackets settled into the game, as demonstrated by a 6-4 tally in the second half.

Payton Anderson made seven saves in 90 minutes for UWS, while Matt Martin of WashU got a clean sheet with a single save.

UWS's season ends with a 16-7 overall record.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

St. Kate's sends UWS packing

A duel of league champions went decisively to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as St. Catherine dismissed Upper Midwest Athletic Conference champion Wisconsin-Superior 4-0 in a NCAA Division III tournament first-round match in St. Paul on Saturday.

The game was scoreless deep into the first half before Amanda Elton put St. Kate's ahead less than two minutes before the break. Emma Watt added a second 3:21 into the second half and the Wildcats tacked two more goals on late.

Freshman Jenna Lang made 11 saves for UWS, which was outpaced 16-2 in shots on target. After its first NCAA tournament appearance in program history, UWS ends its season 18-4-1.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

UWS bested in defensive struggle

The Yellowjackets had their chances but couldn't get the key shots to drop in a 54-48 nonconference loss to St. Norbert at Mertz Mortorelli Gym on Saturday.

UWS closed to within two points with three minutes to play, but went 1-for-4 from the field with two turnovers down the stretch.

Eli Vogel led the Yellowjackets with 11 points, while Josh Reinertsen added 10 off the bench. UWS was 4-for-25 from 3-point range.

Carson Talbert of SNC led all scorers with 16 points.

UWS (1-2) plays at St. Scholastica on Wednesday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Yellowjackets go 0-2 in tournament

A slow start on both ends of the floor hurt Wisconsin-Superior in an eventual 87-70 loss to Wisconsin-River Falls in the UW-Eau Claire Tip-Off Tournament.

UWS gave up a 14-2 run late in the first quarter to trail 22-11 at the quarter. UWS got as close as four points midway through the third period but that was it, as UWRF finished the quarter on a 12-2 run.

Paige Servais scored 20 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from outside the arc and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Macy Nilsen of UWRF led all scorers with 28 points.

Kaelyn Christian added 13 points for UWS (0-3), which plays at Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica on Wednesday.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

UWS drops WIAC opener

Wisconsin-Eau Claire got a natural hat trick from Hanna Zavoral and defeated Wisconsin-Superior 3-1 in the Yellowjackets' Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday in Eau Claire.

Zavoral's hat trick included a power-play goal at 10:03 of the first, a short-handed goal at 4:45 of the second and an even-strength goal at 9:04 of the second. Cora Coz had UWS's only tally, unassisted, at 15:22 of the second period.

McKenzie Whalen made 28 saves for the Yellowjackets, who were outshot 31-14.

UWS (3-2, 0-1 WIAC) travels Friday for a WIAC game at Northland.

CROSS COUNTRY

Yellowjackets compete at Regionals

The UWS men's cross country team finished 22nd as a team at the NCAA Division III North Regional on Saturday in Colfax, Wisconsin. Derrick Moe, a senior, had a team-best 63rd-place finish in 25:56.97 for 8 kilometers.

On the women's side, UWS was 31st. Nicole Koski finished 135th in a time of 24:58.81 for 6 kilometers.
