Yellowjackets report: UWS men bust out in soccer victory at Concordia

Sep. 11—MOORHEAD — Wisconsin-Superior scored three times in the second half to break open a nonconference men's soccer match at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Sept. 10, coming away 4-1 winners.

The Yellowjackets (2-1) actually surrendered the game's first goal, from Mason Weigel in the 26th minute. However, Phillip Eriksen evened it up for the visitors about six minutes later.

After the halftime break, Blake Perry put UWS ahead with his goal in the 59th minute before Eriksen made it 3-1 only 77 seconds later. Blake tacked on an insurance goal for the final margin.

UWS had a 16-12 margin in shots, 9-6 in shots on target. Goalkeeper Alex Paredes made five saves.

UWS returns to the field on Tuesday for a nonconference road game at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The Yellowjackets had a sour finish in the Subway Stinger Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gym on Saturday, losing 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 25-23, 21-15, 15-7) to Macalester and 3-0 (25-20, 29-27, 25-22) to Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica to conclude the two-day tournament.

UWS rallied from two sets to one down to force a fifth against the Scots, but the comeback bid was short-circuited by falling behind 8-2 in the fifth set. The Yellowjackets never got closer than 10-7 and lost the last five points to end the match.

Cassy Teff led or co-led UWS in four categories: kills (13), blocks (two), assists (17) and digs (20). Alexie Pryd added 10 kills and 16 digs.

The rivalry matchup with the Yellowjackets was nearly level statistically, but the Saints had the better of key points in sets two and three.

Pryd and Teff led the UWS offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Teff had 17 assists and Lizzy Schmidt 16, while Jenna Anderson paced the Yellowjackets with 17 digs.

UWS (2-6) hosts Hamline on Wednesday before the Saints and Yellowjackets meet again, in Duluth, on Sept. 17.
