Yellowjackets report: UWS outlasts Martin Luther in five-setter

Oct. 15—Wisconsin-Superior picked a good time to be both potent and accurate offensively, recording 10 kills against one error in the fifth set to earn a 3-2 (22-25, 25-13, 25-27, 25-19, 15-9) Upper Midwest Athletic Conference volleyball victory at Martin Luther on Friday, Oct. 14 in New Ulm, Minnesota.

The Yellowjackets let the first set slip away after fighting back to a 21-21 tie and came up on the short end of a 25-25 third set, requiring their fifth fifth set of the season and first since the UMAC opener at Northland on Sept. 20. UWS was up to the task, however, only allowing the Knights to score consecutive points once in the frame. UWS didn't have a big run either, but three bursts of three proved to be enough cushion to hold a 14-9 lead when Kaylin Plautz put away a kill on match point for the victory.

Alexie Pryd had a huge performance, including 18 kills and 21 digs. Plautz and Maiana Stark finished with 11 kills. Colleen Claude (24 assists) and Cassy Teff (23) split setting duties, while Jenna Anderson paced the defense with 25 digs, while Teff and Hailey Atwood added 10 apiece.

UWS (12-9, 8-1 UMAC) plays Saturday at Bethany Lutheran.

Two goals apiece from Drake Schramm and Josh Bellamy capped a lopsided 6-1 UMAC men's soccer rout by Wisconsin-Superior vs. Martin Luther at NBC Spartan Sports Complex on Friday.

The Yellowjackets enforced nearly one-way traffic throughout the 90 minutes, including a 43-5 advantage in shot attempts, a 16-4 edge in shots on target and a 15-0 margin on corner kicks.

Schramm broke through on the scoreboard and in the stat sheet, scoring his first of the year in the 15th minute. Bellamy followed with his first of the game and fifth of the season seven minutes later. Both players added a second goal early in the second half to make it 5-0.

Johannes Bourman had a consolation goal for the Knights, but Dan Cundy finished the scoring for UWS in the 73rd minute.

Patrick Sessions (two saves) and Alex Paredes (one) split goaltending duties for UWS, for whom Joel Thomas also scored and Freddy Watson had three assists.
