Yellowjackets report: UWS volleyball extends unbeaten UMAC start

Oct. 1—SUPERIOR — Wisconsin-Superior controlled the key points and earned a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) sweep of Minnesota Morris on Friday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference volleyball at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

UWS had one fewer kill for the match, two more attack errors and a marginally lower hitting percentage (.136 to .165) than its opponent.

The Yellowjackets pulled out the first set by winning five of the last six points. In the second, UWS went on a four-point run to reach set point at 24-19, finally putting the visitors away on the fourth attempt via a service error. In the third, a run of four gave UWS a 22-19 lead. After the Cougars drew within one, the Yellowjackets won the last three points of the night and the match.

Maiana Stark had 14 kills in the win, while Alexie Pryd kicked in 10 more. Colleen Claude (15 assists) and Cassy Teff (14 assists) shared duties on the second ball, while Jenna Anderson's 15 digs led the defense along with 13 from Pryd.

UWS (8-8, 4-0 UMAC) returns to the floor on Saturday to face Crown.

Allison Alessi had a hat trick and Mya Holmquist came close as Wisconsin-Superior routed Crown 6-0 in UMAC women's soccer on Friday afternoon in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota.

The first two legs of Alessi's feat came in the 32nd and 45th minutes, coming on free kicks from nearly identical locations on the field. Holmquist started a four-goal second half for the visitors by scoring her fifth and sixth goals of the season in the 49th and 67th minutes, respectively before Alessi grabbed her third of the game 7:45 from the end. It was the first hat trick of the Shakopee, Minnesota native's collegiate career.

UWS goalies Jenna Lang and Quinn Clark were not called upon to make a save as their team held a 10-0 advantage in shots on target and 16-3 overall.

Lindrey Schendel added a late goal for the Yellowjackets (4-3-2, 4-0-0 UMAC), who travel to Minnesota Morris on Saturday afternoon.

It took Wisconsin-Superior only 27 seconds to take the lead on Friday at Crown and they only dominated more from there, rolling 6-0 in a UMAC men's soccer game in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota.

Mackie Ringrose had the early goal, his first of the season. It was followed relatively soon after by Brandon Conklin at the 8:10 mark. Josh Bellamy converted the first of two penalty kick opportunities for a 3-0 lead after barely 15 minutes had passed. He'd add a second from open play in the 54th minute before finishing the scoring with his hat trick goal, again from the spot, just before the hour mark to make it 6-0.

UWS (5-2-1, 3-0-1 UMAC) got a combined shutout from Alex Paredes and Patrick Sessions. Gavin Watkinson also scored for the Yellowjackets, who play at Minnesota Morris on Saturday.
