Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher has joined the cast of new sci-fi thriller Companion.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress has signed on to appear in a "titular role", which certainly suggests a leading part, though this is yet to be officially confirmed by film bosses.

Thatcher is one of many confirmed stars for the new project, with additional cast members including The Boys's Jack Quaid, The White Lotus star Lukas Gage, Never Have I Ever actress Megan Suri and What We Do in the Shadows' Harvey Guillén.

Companion is being developed by the same team behind smash-hit horror Barbarian. It's set to be the directorial debut for Drew Hancock, who has written the original screenplay for the film.

No plot details have been shared as yet, though THR reports that Thatcher "is set to play a character who is more than meets the eye".

According to TheWrap, Companion has been acquired by production company New Line Cinema, which also won the multi-studio bidding war for Barbarian producer Zach Cregger’s next film Weapons.

Cregger is confirmed to produce Companion alongside Raphael Margules and JD Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures and Roy Lee of Vertigo – the same film-making team that ensured the success of Barbarian.

Production on the new film is slated to begin this summer, marking quite a busy schedule for Yellowjackets actress Sophie Thatcher.

Audiences can currently see Thatcher on screens as Sadie in the film adaptation of Stephen King's 1973 thriller The Boogeyman.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, she revealed how it was the film's terrifying script which initially drew her to the project.

"The script was devastating," she said. "Sadie is just a really complicated complex character. And she has such an incredible arc.

"As an actor, that is immediately what drew me in. I feel like it translated really well to screen, you could feel that in the script, you could feel the terror."

The Boogeyman was released in cinemas on June 2.

Yellowjackets season 2 airs on Showtime in the US and Paramount+ in the UK.
