‘Yellowstone’ episodes will air on TV this weekend, just not where you would expect it

“Yellowstone” is heading back to television this weekend, but not how you might expect.

It’s been a tumultuous time for “Yellowstone” ever since the mid-season 5 finale aired in January. News broke that Kevin Costner wanted to leave the series, Paramount confirmed in May that it would be the show’s last and a Writer’s Guild of America strike further halted production on the remaining episodes.

However, “Yellowstone” will in fact air on television this weekend, but it will be in the form of old episodes rather than new ones.

CBS will air “Yellowstone” on Sundays this fall after NFL games at 7:30 p.m. and the first episode fans will be treated to this weekend will be season 1 episode 1. From there, the show will continue airing episodes week-to-week.

This is the first time “Yellowstone” will air on CBS, since its normal home is on the Paramount Network. Both CBS and the Paramount Network are owned by Paramount Global.

CBS’ move comes amid the writer’s and Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes. Both guilds are pushing for more equitable contracts, with the main focus on residuals and the the use of artificial intelligence in projects.

The decision to air old episodes of “Yellowstone” and more reality shows is an expected one, with studios looking to fill their television schedules since there’s nothing new to produce with actors and writers on strike, according to Variety.

Fans who can’t wait until the fall can always stream the first five seasons of “Yellowstone” on Peacock. As for the series’ two prequel shows — “1883” and “1923” — they are streaming on Paramount+.
