Yelp’s ‘Top 100 Places to Eat in Florida 2023′ list includes 22 in Broward, Palm Beach counties

Yelp’s algorithm sure loves what’s cooking in Broward and Palm Beach counties, with 22 restaurants in these areas occupying the site’s just-released 2023 ranking of the “Top 100 Places to Eat in Florida.”

The list, released Tuesday morning by the crowdsourced review site, rated the restaurants on many criteria, such as counting the volume and high ratings of user reviews between Jan. 1, 2022, and Jan. 1, 2023.

According to a blog entry sent to the South Florida Sun Sentinel by a Yelp spokesperson, the Sunshine State-centric list represents “places consumers are loving right now,” a ranking “powered by the people, not a small group of restaurant critics.”

So which South Florida restaurant topped the charts? Ranked No. 1 is Pla-Tu Sushi Thai Tapas in South Miami, a neighborhood Japanese-Thai spot near The Shops at Sunset Place that got 150 five-star reviews.

Nearly a quarter of Yelp’s top 100 Florida picks reside in Broward and Palm Beach counties, with choices both noteworthy and puzzling. Highlights include North South Grill (No. 5), a year-old, comfort-food shack serving smash burgers and cheesesteak subs made with American Wagyu beef, along with gyros, chicken sandwiches and salads. There is also Laotian-Thai eatery Larb Thai-Isan in Fort Lauderdale (No. 11) and another hamburger stronghold, Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill (No. 6), also in Fort Lauderdale.

Of course, Yelp’s algorithm continues to mystify us. Vegan eatery The Rabbit Hole in Pompano Beach is ranked No. 19 with a perfect five-star rating and 365 reviews and yet Italian spot Prosecco22 in Pembroke Pines, with 118 reviews and a 4.5 star rating, is ranked No. 3? Why does Buccan, the Palm Beach small-plates bistro from multiple James Beard nominee Clay Conley, occupy the middle of the pack at No. 52 despite having 614 reviews and 4.5 stars? And why did Yelp’s “Top Restaurants of 2022″ once list Delray Beach institution Dada at No. 46 — and now it’s fallen all the way to No. 97? Was it something they said?
