If you don’t know the name Ryan Michelle Bathe, you do now: The actress, 42, has made appearances on shows such as Empire, How I Met Your Mother, and Trauma, and she's gearing up to star in BET's TV adaptation of The First Wives Club. But Bathe, who just so happens to be Sterling K. Brown's wife, is best recognized for her recurring role on This Is Us as Yvette, a family friend of the Pearsons. Since she's about to get megawatt famous, here's what to know about her.

Ryan Michelle Bathe and Sterling K. Brown met at Stanford.

Bathe was born July 27, 1976 in St. Louis, Missouri, and was raised in Stanford, Connecticut. She attended Stanford University for her undergraduate degree and received an MFA from New York University in 2001. She met her future husband in 1998 in their undergraduate dorm, and the two of them had the first of what would become many performances together in a play. Their bond was formed through shared experiences and similar pasts.

"We found out that we were both from St. Louis. We didn't know that we were both from St. Louis, like, our parents went to rival high schools. We were born in the same hospital. Like, we were friends," Brown told Entertainment Tonight. "She was dating somebody. Of course she was, she's gorgeous. So we were just buddies." The relationship would become romantic, and they dated on and off in college. The pair eventually turned the relationship switch to the permanent “on” position in 2004, and married in 2007. "I love actors so much, I decided to marry one," Brown said during his acceptance speech at the SAG Awards in 2018. "You're the best scene partner a brother's ever had."

Bathe and Brown have two sons—Andrew Jason Sterling Brown, 8, and Amaré Michael Ryan Christian Brown, 3— and Bathe has been very open about their parenting styles.

Oh, and they definitely know fans look to them as an example. Bathe told Essence, “Sterling told me he wanted a relationship that others could ‘see God in’ and that ‘inspired people to love each other and want to be married.’”

She’s appeared on some of your favorite shows.

Bathe’s career started in 2001 with a few TV movie roles, and she's guest-starred on shows like ER and Girlfriends. Her first regular role was as Sara Holt on Boston Legal in its second season, and she also appeared on Girlfriends, How I Met Your Mother, and Private Practice, not to mention her recurring role on the short-lived NBC series Trauma in 2010. Her first starring role on a television series was in 2011 on the TV Land sitcom Retired at 35. In 2012, she co-starred alongside Katherine Heigl in the movie One For The Money, and she's also appeared on Empire.

She's set to star in BET's television adaptation of the First Wives Club, where she will play Ari. According to Deadline, her character is “a confident, type-A attorney with impeccable style and not a single strand of hair out of place. She was on track to make partner but sidestepped her career to advance her husband’s political ambitions and raise their two kids. When a crisis reunites her with her best friends from college, she is able to translate her kick-ass courtroom skills to help them reclaim their independence and rekindle the camaraderie (and fun) of their college glory days.”

Bathe and Brown have worked together many, many times.

They’re collaborators in their marriage, and they’re collaborators in their careers! Bathe and Brown have worked together twice—on This Is Us and Army Wives—but never on screen at the same time. Bathe’s This Is Us character, Yvette, is seen in flashbacks to the Pearsons’ childhood as a friend of the family and the woman who educates Mandy Moore’s matriarch, Rebecca, on how to raise a Black child. On Army Wives, Bathe recurred as the girlfriend of Kellie Martin’s character CPT Nicole Galassini.

But don’t ask them to rehearse together. Bathe told E! News, "We've learned that there are certain minefields and pitfalls in our relationship, like a slalom, we just move right past them, rehearsing together is one of those things."

Bathe’s mother is also a performer.

Bathe is the daughter of singer Clare Bathé, a member of the disco group Machine, whose 1979 single, “There But for the Grace of God Go I," was listed by Slate magazine as the sixth greatest dance song of all time in 2006.
