YG Entertainment announces new girl group to debut in 2023

YG Entertainment recently posted a teaser image on social media of their upcoming girl group.

The image, which was shared on Thursday, shows the silhouettes of seven women and accompanying text that says “YG NEXT MOVEMENT” and “COMING SOON.” It also features a date and time: Jan. 1, 2023, 12 a.m. KST.

This will make the forthcoming act YG’s first new girl group in seven years since BLACKPINK’s 2016 debut.

The label has not confirmed an official name or member lineup, but the new group’s announcement aligns with previously speculated details.

In October, Koreaboo reported possible evidence of a new YG girl group with seven members called Baby Monster or BAEMON.

Noh Hee Young, the CEO of YG Foods, spoke about the group in a YouTube video: “Right now, there’s a new group after BLACKPINK called Baby Monster that’s coming. They’re no joke, they’re like 10 Jennies.”

Additionally, songwriters enlisted for a writing camp in September reportedly mentioned they were working on tracks for a girl group. One of the writers mentions the name Baby Monster.

YG’s announcement is the latest in a whirlwind of YG-related news.

On Thursday, the members of YG boy group iKON terminated their contracts with the label in a mutual agreement, ending a seven-year partnership.

Also on Thursday came initial reports from The Korea Herald and K-Pop Herald that BLACKPINK will operate under The Black Label, a YG subsidiary label headed by the girl group’s main producer and songwriter, Teddy Park.

Earlier this week, Taeyang and Daesung of BIGBANG left YG following their contract expirations, with the former signing with The Black Label. YG has said they will welcome the members of BIGBANG for any future collaborations. BIGBANG member T.O.P. left YG in February.
