Yip Pin Xiu retains gold in record time at World Para Swimming Championships

SINGAPORE — Singapore para-swimmer Yip Pin Xiu retained her women's 100m backstroke (S2) gold in championship-record time at the World Para Swimming Championships on Tuesday (14 June).
The five-time Paralympic gold medallist won her race in 2 minutes 15.16 seconds at the Penteada Olympic Swimming Complex in Funchal, Portugal. The winning time broke the previous championship record of 2:18.61, also set by Yip, when she won gold in the 2019 edition in London.
The 30-year-old also holds the world record of 2:07.09 for the race, which she set at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics.
This is Yip's fourth gold medal at the world championships. She had won two golds in the 2019 edition in the 100m and 50m backstroke (S2) events, and another in the 50m freestyle (S3) event back in 2010 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
Yip has been dominant in the women's backstroke (S2) events since 2016, setting the world records for the 50m and 100m en route to winning golds at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, and then retaining both golds at last year's Tokyo edition.
She has stated that she will be gunning for more Paralympic medal wins at the 2024 edition in Paris.
