Ylenia Aguilar has suspended her campaign to succeed Rep. Ruben Gallego in Congress.

"I must suspend my campaign effective immediately due to unexpected health developments," she said Friday on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. "Thank you to everyone who supported my campaign and encouraged me to join this race."

Arizona's 3rd Congressional District includes a portion of Glendale and most of southern, western and downtown Phoenix. The district's incumbent, Gallego, is running for the U.S. Senate.

Aguilar was running against Democrats Yassamin Ansari, Hector Jaramillo, Laura Pastor and Raquel Terán. In the third quarter, Aguilar had $56,319.55 on hand; that's more than Jaramillo.

"I launched my campaign for Congress because MY story is OUR story," Aguilar said in a statement. "I know how hard we work and how difficult it can be to get ahead."

Aguilar is a single mother and would have been the first member of Congress from Arizona to have been a formerly undocumented immigrant. According to previous Arizona Republic reporting, her most important policy issues were health care and education.

Duane Wooten, a pediatrics specialist in Phoenix, has filed a statement of interest to run for the House seat. He has yet to file his nomination paperwork or collect the required petition signatures, but told The Republic on Friday that he expects to launch his campaign this month.
