For the past few years, the YMCA has been hard at work expanding its operations in San Angelo.

The new preschool program will be offered at 2833 College Hills Blvd., former home of the Second Baptist Church.

The facility is about a month away from getting a certificate of occupancy and will then work on licensing, according to preschool director Gidget Tate.

"The hopeful finish date is before the end of 2022," Tate said.

However, the new location will no longer accommodate the initially planned "Y-Town." The plan was for multiple rooms in the new center to resemble different businesses, similar to a children's museum.

"Early on, shortly after COVID hit, that changed," Tate said. "We went with strictly the child development center where we are able to move all of our child care facility over to that location."

There will still be a gym, basketball court, playground and more.

As for the preschool, online registration is open at YMCAsanangelo.org. The former church building is expected to be able to accommodate 96 children ages 3-5.

The cost is $120 a week for members and $135 for non-members.

For anyone wishing to donate to the YMCA and its expansion projects, donations can be made on the organization's website.
