YNW Melly Tests Positive for COVID-19 in Jail

YNW Melly has tested positive for COVID-19 while in a Florida jail, the Florida rapper’s official Instagram account announced. He’s currently awaiting trial in a Broward County jail after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The rapper’s team announced plans to file a motion for restricted release. Pitchfork has reached out to YNW Melly’s lawyers.

“The jails and prisons in this country are creating an extremely dangerous situation by not providing hand sanitizer and proper hygiene care,” Melly’s attorney Bradford M. Cohen told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “I have prepared and will be filing an emergency motion in the morning for his conditional release.”

Prosecutors claim that YNW Melly and YNW Bortlen killed YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser in South Florida in 2018. Melly has pleaded not guilty. The State of Florida announced plans to seek the death penalty against Melly.

Earlier today (April 2), Tekashi 6ix9ine got an early release from prison due to coronavirus concerns. His history of being hospitalized due to asthma was a factor in his release.
