Yonkers gang assault: Jury finds man guilty in attack outside deli

A 20-year-old Yonkers gang member who was a catalyst for a vicious mob attack outside a Yonkers deli last year was convicted following the only trial in the case, the Westchester District Attorney’s Office said.

Jurors on Thursday found Develle Coates guilty of the top charge, first-degree gang assault, and he faces up to 25 years in prison. Prosecutors identified Coates as a member of the 300 Bloodhound Brims.

The 12 other defendants in the June 17, 2021, attack on North Broadway had already pleaded guilty.

The 33-year-old victim was hit in the head outside a deli after a confrontation inside. Coates then knocked the victim unconscious and, as he lay on the ground, the man was repeatedly kicked and stomped on by a large group. The victim suffered traumatic brain injury, protracted disfigurement and lost or chipped teeth, the DA’s Office said.

The attack was captured on surveillance video and investigators were also helped by footage from a videographer who was working on a rap video for one of the defendants.

Coates was returned to the Westchester County jail to await sentencing, which acting state Supreme Court Justice Robert Neary scheduled for Dec. 2. He faces mandatory prison time of at least five years.

Sentences for several of the other defendants have ranged from five to eight years in prison.

Vance Major, 23, was promised an 8-year prison term for second-degree gang assault when he is sentenced in January.

Dior Moore and Perryon McKenney, both 19, and Timothy Whitney,  24, have each been sentenced to eight years in prison for first-degree gang assault.

Latrell Murray, 23, and Darden Thomas, 22, were each sentenced to eight years in prison for first-degree robbery and second-degree robbery, respectively.

An 18-year-old adolescent offender was sentenced to five years in prison for first-degree gang assault.

A 19-year-old adolescent offender and Jahnai McNeal, 20, were each sentenced to 3 ½ years for second-degree gang assault.

Drayquan Green, 21, was promised a five-year term when he is sentenced in January for first-degree gang assault.

An 18-year-old adolescent offender was sentenced as a youthful offender to one year in detention.

Peter Thompson, 20, pleaded guilty to a lesser felony, riot in the first-degree, and disorderly conduct, a violation, but the felony will be dismissed and the court records sealed if he stays out of trouble for a year, according to his lawyer, William Wagstaff. Wagstaff said Thompson was not a gang member.
