Fifty school districts, including seven in the Lower Hudson Valley, will get a chunk of $100 million in state grant money to put toward addressing student learning loss and mental health.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the districts receiving the money Wednesday.
Port Chester and Yonkers were among 15 districts receiving grant money to address pandemic learning loss.
Yonkers, Carmel, North Rockland, Hendrick Hudson and Peekskill, along with Southern Westchester BOCES, were among 40 districts statewide receiving mental health grants.
“This funding will help our teachers and school staff pinpoint where students have fallen behind and provide students with the crucial resources needed to support their mental health, especially after the pandemic," Hochul said in a news release.
To address learning loss, districts can use the money to: expand programs and evidence-based interventions; improve staff and students' ability to identify learning loss; promote getting help; and make sure the help available aligns with the diversity of students.
Six Lower Hudson districts got grant money to: expand access to mental health treatment; help staff and students identify mental health concerns and promote seeking help; and utilize evidence-based practices "that are culturally, linguistically, and trauma responsive while promoting student diversity, equity, and inclusion."
Hochul announced the application for the funds in August.
