York Beach Surf Club avoids foreclosure again: Auction canceled

YORK — The foreclosure auction of the York Beach Surf Club has been canceled, a week after its owner said he was working to resolve financial issues with its lender.

The auction was scheduled to take place Oct. 26 on the hotel premises at 780 York St. Auctioneer Stef Keenan of Keenan Auction Company said he was notified by their client this week the auction was no longer necessary. He said he could not specify details, but earlier this month York Beach Surf Club owner Taylor Perkins said he was working on an extension with his bank and expected the matter to be resolved.

This is the second time in three years the Surf Club has faced foreclosure. In 2021, it also had an auction scheduled, and it was later canceled after Perkins refinanced with his bank.

Perkins could not be reached for comment this week. He had said Oct. 5 he expected the auction would be canceled, stating he and the lender had “worked it all out.”

“It’s just taking more time than we anticipated,” he said.

The property is assessed at $4,498,000, according to the listing by Keenan Auction Company. There were originally two previews scheduled for prospective buyers Oct. 10 and 19. The first preview was canceled when Keenan said he was told that a forbearance agreement was in the works. This week, he said he was notified the second preview and auction were no longer necessary.

“We were told to cancel, and that’s all I can say,” Keenan said. “We won’t have an auction.”

Perkins and his father Sonny, a renowned Maine surfer, purchased the property in 2020 with a vision of transforming it into a surf-themed destination resort.

The hotel features 42 guest rooms, 10 bungalows, a heated saltwater pool and a pool bar.
