York boys track win fifth straight Western Maine Conference title; girls place third

GORHAM, Maine – The York High School boys track team earned its fifth straight Western Maine Conference championship Friday at the University of Southern Maine.

The Wildcats scored 131 points, easily beating Freeport, which placed second with 71 points.

Poland (70), Greely (67) and Yarmouth (65) placed third through fifth, respectively in the 14-team field.

The York girls placed third with 112 points. Freeport (145) and Greely (120) placed second and third, respectively. Traip (12) was 10th in the 13-team field.

Not to be outdone, York senior Cary Drake won the girls mile (5:25.28) and two-mile (11:54.91) and was named the meet track MVP.

"It was wonderful to have Matt and Cary named the meet MVP's," York head coach Ted Hutch said. "Coaches voted based on the athletes' performances over the entire season. Matt and Cary are certainly the best thrower and best distance runner in York track history, and perhaps the best ever in this conference. We're lucky to have them both on our team."

The York boys won two relays. The quartet of Jack Estes, Charlie Drake, Mike Hanlon and Jon Luchette placed first in the junior 4x200-meter relay (1:46.34).

And Sam Hunter Will Gear, Owen Spaulding, and Hayden Atkinson won the 4x800-meter relay (9:20.39).

Hans Bakke placed first in the junior 55-meter hurdles (9.31).

York had second-place finishes in by Estes (junior 400, 1:00.61), Drake (55 hurdles, 9.72), Jacob Donnell (junior, high jump, 5-02), Nick Hoy (55, 6.71), and Charlie Newton (junior 55 hurdles, 8.52)

The Wildcats had third-place finishes by Spaulding (400, 55.14), Sam Hunter (800, 2:08.4), Landlon Morrison (mile, 4:49.88) and Newton (pole vault, 11-0).

Like the boys, the York girls won two relays. The foursome of Vida Kiper-Phelps, Zoe Carroll, Eliza Dunn and Karianna Hulstrom won the junior 4x200 (2:01.53); and Greta Yauch, Molly Kenealy, Drake and Lucy Kocev won the 4x800 (10:44.36).

Kocey was third in the high jump (4-10), and Kenealy was third in the 800 (2:36.66). Dunn was first in the junior 55 hurdles (10.26), while Audrey Drennan (10.29) and Hulstrom (10.53) were second and third, respectively.
