Eight people were left injured after a New York City bus crashed and was left hanging over an overpass, New York Emergency Management said on Thursday.

The bus, which crashed on the Cross-Bronx expressway, was split along the articulation joint, which left the front half hanging off the bridge, while the back remained in place.

Video from the scene shows the front end smashed and dangling near-vertically off the bridge.

The crash took place at 11pm local time. All of the injured, along with the driver, were taken to hospital for treatment, although their injuries are considered minor, and non-life threatening, according to a spokesperson for the New York fire department.

"The bus fell approximately 50 feet onto the access road. The patients suffered injuries consistent with a fall from such a great height," Deputy Fire Chief Paul Hopper said in a social media post.

Firefighters will secure the fuel and any other hazardous materials before pulling the bus fully onto the road, Acting Battalion Chief Steven Moore said in the post.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
