York County Detention Center unveils newest K-9 recruit

In honor of National Correctional Officer Week, a new detention officer joined the York County Detention Center and she’s ready to sniff out crime, according to our partners at CN2 News.

Storm, a black lab, was recruited to crack down on crime in the detention center. The new recruit will work with Sergeant LaManda Hooper, the detention center’s K-9 handler, randomly sniffing out electronics and drugs within the center, CN2 reports.

The detention center told CN2 the idea to recruit Storm came from Chief Jail Administrator John Hicks.

“You do hear about a statewide increase of substances coming in, cell phones coming in to coordinate escapes and assaults,” Hicks told CN2, “that’s what we want to try and avoid.”

Storm has been on the job since April 19, Hicks said in just the first few weeks of being on duty, Storm found drugs inside the center, CN2 reports.

“She’s as happy about searching as I am.” Storm’s handler Hooper told CN2.
