York County hosts drive through Narcan giveaway to combat overdose deaths

More people in York County, South Carolina, have life-saving equipment.

According to our partners at CN2 News, a drive-through Narcan and resources giveaway was held in Rock Hill on Tuesday as a way to lower overdose deaths.

As we reach the halfway point of the year and there have been about 50 suspected overdose deaths in York County alone, that number inspired Keystone Substance Abuse Service and York County All on Board to host a Narcan and resources drive-through event, CN2 reports.

All resources, including Narcan, were free to anyone who came. Keystone official Melaina Mautro told CN2 that even if you don’t think you’ll ever need Narcan, it’s always good to have, and you don’t have to be around controlled substances to be able to carry Narcan.

CN2 reports that this year the York County Coroner’s Office confirmed that 26 out of the 31 overdose deaths were caused by fentanyl.

The coroner’s office is continuing to remind people that Narcan is only helpful for opioid overdoses and that it may become less effective or require more doses for drugs that have been mixed together, according to CN2.
