York High duo highlights nine YAIAA football players selected to all-state team

Jahiem White and Sam Stoner broke records together the past four years at York High.

They made the District 3 playoffs three times together.

They’ll be college teammates at West Virginia together.

Now they’re both all-state football players together.

White and Stoner were two of five YAIAA football players named to the Class 6A all-state team by Pennsylvania sports writers Friday. The other YAIAA players named to the Class 6A team were Dallastown wide receiver Kenny Johnson, Central York running back Juelz Goff and Central York linebacker Domenic Grove.

In total, nine YAIAA football players earned all-state honors Friday. Dover wide receiver Thomas Smyser, Spring Grove safety Andrew Osmun and New Oxford corner back Idriz Ahmetovic were named all-state in Class 5A. York Suburban running back Mikey Bentivegna earned the honor in Class 4A.

The all-state teams in the three smallest classifications were announced Thursday, but no YAIAA players were selected to those teams.

Sports reporters from across the state were involved in the nomination and voting process.

The 5-foot-9 White was named all-state for the third straight season. The GameTimePA YAIAA Player of the Year rushed for 1,918 yards on 189 carries. That's 10.1 yards per carry. He also had 428 receiving yards and scored 34 offensive touchdowns ― 29 on the ground and five through the air. He added a kick return touchdown and an interception return score.

He rushed for over 200 yards four times, including a 417-yard performance in a 66-49 win over Dallastown. He scored six touchdowns in that game. In the final game of his high school career, he rushed for 328 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-44 loss to Central York.

White finished his career second in YAIAA history and first in York High history with 5,758 rushing yards.

Stoner was named all-state for the first time in his career. The top quarterback in the YAIAA, he completed 68% of his passes for 2,051 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for four more touchdowns. His top game came in Week 3 when he passes for 262 yards and six touchdowns in a 54-47 win over Carlisle.

Stoner finished his career fifth in YAIAA history and first in York High history with 5,296 passing yards.

Stoner and White will both report early to West Virginia next month. White has a full scholarship, and Stoner is a preferred walk-on.

A University of Pitt commit, Johnson was named all-state for the second consecutive season. The 6-foot-2 wide receiver caught 42 passes for 724 yards. He was also a factor running the ball and on kick returns and scored nine total touchdowns. In a game against York High, he caught nine passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns and took a kick back for a fourth score.

Goff was named all-state for the first time. The 5-foot-9 junior running back was named to the 6A team as an "athlete." Goff carried the ball 195 times for 1,611 yards and an average of 8.3 yards per carry. He also caught 24 passes for 335 yards. He scored 31 total touchdowns with 26 coming on the ground, three on receptions and two on kick returns. He rushed for 232 yards and four scores in a 43-38 win over York High that clinched the YAIAA Division I title for Central York in Week 10.

Goff already has four NCAA Division I offers and recently received one from the University of Pittsburgh.

A junior linebacker, Grove was named all-state for the first time. He had 143 tackles, three sacks and 12 tackles for a loss for a Panthers team that finished 10-2. He had 18 tackles in Central York's playoff win over York High.

St. Joseph's Prep dual-threat junior quarterback Samaj Jones was named the Class 6A Player of the Year after leading the Hawks to a state title. Harrisburg head coach Calvin Everett was named Coach of the Year for leading the Cougars to a District 3 Class 6A title and appearance in the state final against St. Joseph's Prep.

Mikey Bentivegna spent his senior football season topping one great game after another.

He racked up more rushing yards and all-purpose yards than any player in the YAIAA this season.

Those efforts rewarded him with all-state honors.

Bentivegna was named an all-state running back in Class 4A by Pennsylvania sports writers Friday morning. It was his first time being named to an all-state team after he missed time his junior season due to a concussion.

The York Suburban senior was one of six running backs named all-state in Class 4A. Five of those players rushed for over 2,000 yards this season. The other is Marquese Williams, a Minnesota commit who led Bishop McDevitt to a state title.

But Bentivegna’s statistics rivaled any running back in any classification.

The 5-foot-9 senior rushed for 2,385 carries on 244 carries. He caught 27 passes for 431 yards and registered 449 return yards. That adds up to an insane 3,265 all-purpose yards. He also scored 37 total touchdowns with 32 coming on the ground.

He rushed for over 200 yards and put up over 300 all-purpose yards five times each. He scored multiple touchdowns in a game eight times.

In the District 3 Class 4A first round, Bentivegna rushed for 382 yards and six touchdowns on just 12 carries in a 41-6 win over Donegal. It was York Suburban’s first playoff win since 1986.

He set York Suburban school records for rushing yards in a season, touchdowns in a season, touchdowns in a career and rushing yards in a single game.

He has yet to make a college decision but has offers from Division II Seton Hill and Division I FCS St. Francis.

Bishop McDevitt quarterback Stone Saunders and coach Jeff Weachter were named Player of the Year and Coach of the Year in Class 4A for leading the Crusaders to a state title.

Thomas Smyser, Andrew Osmun and Idriz Ahmetovic all had the ability to make plays on both sides of the ball this season.

Smyser was named all-state as a wide receiver, while Osmun and Ahmetovic earned the honors at defensive back. It was the first all-state selection for all of them.

Smyser caught 59 passes for 1,170 yards and nine touchdowns for a Dover team that went from 1-9 to 9-3. The Eagles won a playoff game for the first time since 2013. He had five games with more than 100 receiving yards. The 5-foot-10 junior also intercepted four passes as a corner back.

Osmun was named the top defensive player in YAIAA Division I while scoring 20 total touchdowns on offense and punting and kicking for a Spring Grove team that finished 5-5. Osmun had 82 tackles, a sack and an interception. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior was a physical tackler who opposing teams tried to avoid when passing the ball. He'll play college football for Division I FCS Fordham.

Ahmetovic led the YAIAA with seven interceptions for Colonials team that finished 8-3. The 6-foot junior took one back pick for a touchdown. Ahmetovic intercepted two passes in a loss to South Western and three in a win over York Suburban. The dynamic athlete and potential future starting quarterback was also the Colonials' kicker and punter and contributed as a runner and receiver.

While he doesn't play in the YAIAA, Northern York junior Cole Bartram made the all-state team as an athlete. He rushed for 1,683 yards and 17 scores and made 148 tackles on defense.

Pine-Richland quarterback Ryan Palmieri and head coach Jon LeDonne were named Player and Coach of the Year after leading the Rams to a state title.
