York County Solid Waste Authority destroys 3.5 tons of medication in 2023
YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A York County waste company has announced they have disposed of 3.5 tons of unused and expired medication in 2023.
The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) announced on Wednesday that the medication was collected by way of its secure Medication Return Box Program, community drug take-back events, as well as illegal drugs delivered by police for disposal.

The Medication Return Box Program works like a mailbox as once medications are deposited, they cannot be taken back out and are contained in a locked compartment that can only be accessed by law enforcement officials. The box is bolted to the floor and wall. Law enforcement maintains the box and makes sure the medications inside are secure until they can be destroyed.

If residents are interested in a return box, they should remove all personal information from containers. The boxes only accept residential medications, including pet medications.
Pharmacies, hospitals, and other commercial sources of medications are not eligible. Syringes and other sharps are not accepted.
