New York hits all-time low for COVID-19 infection rates

NEW YORK — When it comes to coronavirus infection rates, New York is still going down, down, down.

The statewide seven-day positive test average Saturday dipped to an all-time low of 0.54%, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced.

There were just 761 new cases logged in the state in the last 24 hours out of more than 140,000 tests administered.

All five boroughs of New York City also recorded rates about the same or lower than the statewide average.

The weekly average positivity rate has declined every day for two months now in a sign the pandemic remains under control for now.

The steep declines may be leveling off as the daily positivity rate also checked in at 0.54%.

Vaccination rates are still rising steadily in the state, although slower than when the lifesaving jabs were first rolled out.

More than 19.4 million vaccine doses have been given out including about 517,000 in the past week.

Two-thirds of all adults in the state have received at least one vaccine dose and 58% are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Numbers are also rising among adolescents 12 and older who are now eligible for the shots.
