The footage, which was tweeted by the city’s Sergeant’s Benevolent Association appears to show an NYPD officer struggling on the ground with someone.
A bystander then approaches the scene and seemingly throws an object at the officer. Another bystander picks up the same object and throws it again at the officer a second time.
After the second apparent attack, the person on the ground struggling with the officer manages to escape and the people flee the scene.
NYPD Cop attacked in the Bronx. I guess the critics will now say he overreacted. NYPD Cops defend yourselves, you are alone! pic.twitter.com/424w5bZbC6— SBA (@SBANYPD) June 2, 2020
During the recording, people out of shot appear to be shouting f***-12 in encouragement, an anti-police slang expression.
The attack comes following several nights of violence between police and demonstrators in New York amidst protests of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, who died after in police custody after a Minneapolis police officer pinned him to the ground by his neck for a prolonged period of time.
The city has seen peaceful demonstrations from hundreds of residents take place throughout the day over the last week, but the action has concurrently turned to rioting during the night.
Looting and vandalism have continued to surge throughout the city in the late hours, with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's 11pm curfew failing to hinder demonstrators on Monday.
Mayor Bill De Blasio said that the curfew would be reimposed three hours earlier from 8pm as of Tuesday, in an attempt to control the violent activity, according to The New York Times.
On-duty police officers will also double to 8,000, a massive surge to the streets from the nation's largest policing force.
Outrage over Floyd’s death has spiralled in the last week with violent protests and demonstrators breaking out across the US and in particular Minneapolis, where Floyd died.
The protests have extended to reflect greater demonstrations over the death of black people at the hands of police, and institutional racism throughout the country.
