Lonnie Quinn has the Tri-State Area's latest forecast on CBS2 News At 5.
- Sunny and warmer today, gorgeous actually, but enjoy it while you can.
- Yeah, enjoy it while you can. But what a day out at Citi Field.
LONNIE QUINN: Oh, it was just beautiful. Baseball fans, yeah, this is opening day weather for the home opener there for the Mets, but it was just beautiful whatever you were doing. It was just great outside for everybody, baseball fans, non-baseball fans, weather fans, right? This is your day.
Let's talk about the temperature because it's been nice all day. It's nice right now. It is 67. [LAUGHS] That feels good. Sunshine overhead, high temp was 70 degrees, 12 degrees above the average, which is 58. Look at that. Dick and Jessica, look at that. 90 degrees the record on this day in 1991. What do you guys think, is that the earliest we've ever hit 90?
- I think so, yeah, absolutely.
LONNIE QUINN: Yesterday was. [LAUGHS] Set you up, Dickey boy. Let's talk though about what you should be expecting as we look ahead. This is going to be sort of a last amazing evening of this great weather that we've had because it does change over the next two days.
Read it with me, guys. Follow the bouncing ball. The next two days are not terrible. More cloud cover, little rain chance, but Sunday still looks to take a step down. That's where you look to see our wettest day. I'll show you that in just a moment.
But now Monday looks to be the coldest day, so if you look at the dynamics, it's a beautiful sky out there right now. Southerly component to the wind, warmed us up nicely. You can see all the dynamics, at least I can see them. There is circulating counterclockwise the low-pressure system. This is the cold front that's going to change the temperature profile, and you see the rain out there as well.
So let's start off by talking the wet weather. When does that get here? Well, you go through the overnight hours. You're just fine out there. Early morning hours, partly sunny skies to start off your day. Clouds fill in, at least become more plentiful as you go through the day. But the rain chances are slight. It's primarily late in the day. This is showing 9:30, maybe a stray shower here or there, not much.
And then Saturday morning, a little bit, still not much, cloud cover, sure. But as you go through your day on Saturday, some breaks. It's certainly not a wet weather day. Little bit of rain maybe late Saturday because it's still more likely to find it on Sunday.
Here comes the front, some bouts of heavy rain. That's 7:30 Sunday morning, and then Sunday is now going to have a period of time where it's not raining outside. But there's a bit of rain that trails behind it, so later Sunday could be some more. And that could linger into Monday morning as well.
So for your day tomorrow, again, it's not terrible, it's just not as great as it's been. 62 degrees, some extra clouds float into the area. There's that stray PM shower chance, and then the weekend. Looks like this. You will be 62 Saturday, 64 on Sunday. Sunday has the better chance for the wet weather. Saturday's chance is on the slight side.
Let's spend just a moment though in talking about upcoming hurricane season because we have some new predictions that were just issued. They were issued by the Colorado State University. They're forecasting a pretty busy season. They're saying name storms this year, 17. Average over the last 30 years is 14, so it's above average.
Hurricanes, eight. Major hurricanes, a Cat 3, a 4, or a 5 would be four. Just keep in mind, name storms last year, 30. And there are some changes. There are some changes this year at the National Hurricane Center. There will be no more Greek Alphabet.
If we exhaust the Alphabet, if we get to the letter W, which is the last letter that we use, we're not going to go to the Greek Alphabet. We're just going to start a whole new list of names starting it again.
That's because Ada and Iota we're so big, they were previously retired before they made this decision. So you were already starting off with the Greek Alphabet that was missing two letters, so that wasn't going to work out.
Tropical updates will now start May 15 just because things are starting to ramp up earlier. The ocean temperatures in Key West are already 81 degrees. That's 5 degrees above average, so we could start to see tropical activity sooner rather than later.
62 for Friday, 62 Saturday, 64 Sunday. We talked about those rain chances, slight, slight, more likely. Lingers into Monday. Monday's the coldest one at 58. You're 63 Tuesday, 64 Wednesday, and Thursday of next week, another chance for some wet weather.
But that is the seven-day forecast, but I even gave you a little hurricane information in there, guys. Everything.
- Even the Greek Alphabet.
- Should keep the names a little easier to pronounce too.
LONNIE QUINN: I got to tell you, I'm with you on that. But even when they use the regular names, some of them are a little tricky to pronounce in there.
- Good point. You could do it, Lonnie.
LONNIE QUINN: Isaias it a tough one.
- Yes, that one got me a few times.
LONNIE QUINN: Yeah, got me.
