New Yorker critically injured in pedestrian mishap in Commerce

An New York man remained hospitalized Monday after he was hit by a car in the Banks Crossing outlet area near Commerce, according to the Banks County Fire & Emergency Services.

Matthew Farquharson, 24, of Albany, N.Y., was critically injured when he was hit by the vehicle at about 11 p.m. May 11 on U.S. Highway 441.

The Georgia State Patrol reported that Farquharson entered the highway and walked into the path of a Mitsubishi Outlander driven by a 63-year-old Carnesville woman.

The patrol said the pedestrian was wearing all black and in his attempt to cross the highway, he did not use a crosswalk which was less than 500 feet from where the collision occurred. An employee at a nearby Waffle House witnessed the crash, according to the patrol.

Farquharson, who had numerous head and body injuries, was transported to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, according to emergency services.

The crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
