Yorktown Community Schools awarded state grant for early literacy

YORKTOWN, Ind. − Yorktown Community Schools is among the 72 public school districts in Indiana to receive a Science of Reading grant in exess of $250,000.

The competitive grant is aimed to enhance implementation of research-backed best practices in the Science of Reading and implementing Indiana's Priorities for Early Literacy for students in kindergarten through third grade.

The grant will be used to bolster Yorktown's strategy for reading instruction, using the most effective methods for teaching reading.

The Indiana Department of Education has developed Indiana’s Priorities for Early Literacy. Through this statewide initiative, educators statewide will receive support as they implement science of reading practices. This strategic approach is designed to propel student literacy achievements and cultivate graduates.

The Indiana DOE introduced the Science of Reading grant in September 2023, which was made available to all public school corporations, charter schools, and state-accredited non-public schools, on a competitive basis. The grant is part of an effort to foster academic excellence from an early age.
