Yorktown wins Delaware County girls golf tournament, Kayleigh Agugliaro wins match medalist

MUNCIE, Ind. — Head coach Nathan McClung had a brief "closed-door team meeting" with Yorktown girls golf earlier this season.

He recognized the potential of this group compared to recent seasons, and made sure they knew it too.

"'Hey, the boys won county, conference and sectional. Why can't you do that?'" McClung said.

The Tigers on Saturday accomplished the first of those goals, edging back-to-back Delaware County champion Delta 376-379 at the Muncie Elks Golf Club. Yorktown junior Kayleigh Agugliaro shined with a score of 82, earning medalist honors.

The competition was tight throughout, yet the Tigers never let the moment get too big. They took 34 strokes off their runner-up total from last year as three of Yorktown's four scorers shot under 100, and two under 90.

"Our veteran players played like veteran players, and that was the difference in the tournament ... I never really saw them get super high or super low, and that's the way you want to play golf," McClung said. "It's a great group of kids, and we've told them all year, 'There's a lot of talent on this team, you can do some special things.'"

Agugliaro played alongside Delta's No. 1 and reigning county champion Belle Brown and Wapahani's Olivia Hood. Brown shot an 84, five strokes better than her 2021 outing, but the Yorktown junior showcased her significant improvement from a year ago.

The Tigers' No. 1 didn't even earn All-County honors last year, a disappointment that fueled her work ethic this summer. Agugliaro played in 21 summer tournaments, getting consistent competitive opportunities that reignited her passion for the sport.

Agugliaro said she's gravitated more closely to golf's individuality. Although she's played basketball and other team sports, Agugliaro prefers being in full control of her success and failure on the course. And as she sees her scores drop and skill level ascend, her confidence has grown along with her enjoyment and desire to reach her potential.

"This year I wanted to prove everyone wrong and do better, so coming out on top was really nice and I'm happy that's the way it turned out," Agugliaro said. "Last year, I wasn't really as motivated because I didn't really know about all the tournaments. Then over time, I just started like falling in love with it and I wanted to become better at it and I want to go to college for golf. That's my goal."

She is still part of a team, however, and Yorktown needed more than just the match medalist to dethrone Delta. Senior Grace Finley, who lost a playoff hole against Brown for medalist honors last year after shooting an 89, finished third overall with a score of 87, and Ella VanOoteghem's 97 and Bailey Robertson's 110 proved enough to hold on to the Tigers' slim lead as the scores trickled in.

Finley experienced Yorktown's last county victory during her freshman year in 2019 and was proud to bookend her county career with another championship.

"It was a full circle moment," Finley said. "It's very bittersweet for us (seniors)."

She praised Agugliaro's positive attitude and growth from last year and said this might be the best Yorktown team she's been on. Finley thinks the group's chemistry has never been better, and McClung said her poise and experience was embodied by all of her teammates in crucial stretches of the tournament.

"Grace playing like a senior is what we expect. I think her closing nine was 41. She made par on like four her last six holes, and the girls could feel it was tight out there," McClung said. "We try not to let them know what's going on. The best thing you can do is selfishly take care of yourself, but they knew they were in a battle."

If Saturday was any indication, Yorktown and Delta will continue to push each other as the Hoosier Heritage Conference season unfolds.

They've been the top-2 teams in the county for three consecutive years and finished fifth and fourth, respectively, in their 2021 conference tournament. Delta then won the Muncie Central sectional while Yorktown missed the team cut by seven strokes.

McClung hopes this victory not only grows his players' confidence but also leaves them wanting more.

"Hats off to Delta, they pushed us today," McClung said. "It's certainly a rivalry. I think we root for (Delta), but it's great to finally get one up on county here. It's been a little while since we've gotten them. So really, really proud of the girls. I'm just really happy for them."
