Young El Paso mom, grandfather die in New Mexico highway crash

Fatigue is suspected of being a factor in a nighttime car crash that killed two El Pasoans over the Easter holiday weekend on Interstate 25 between Albuquerque and Socorro, New Mexico, state police said.

Brittny Ramos, 21, and her grandfather Manuel Medrano, 65, died early Saturday at the scene of the crash on I-25, south of the town of Belen, New Mexico State Police said Tuesday.

The crash occurred about 2 a.m. while a 22-year-old man was driving a four-door Chevrolet northbound on I-25. Ramos, Medrano and Ramos' 5-year-old daughter were passengers in the car, state police said.

For unknown reasons, the car drove off the roadway and crashed. Ramos and Medrano died at the scene. The driver and the child were taken to a hospital. The extent of their injuries and medical conditions were unknown, police said.

"Brittny was a sweet gentle soul, (a) hard worker, and an amazing mother to her beautiful daughter which she has left behind at the age of only 5 years old," stated a GoFundMe page collecting money for funeral expenses.

There is also an online fundraiser for Medrano.

A family member told Channel 7-KVIA that Medrano is Ramos' grandfather and the driver is the father of Ramos' daughter. The family was heading to Albuquerque on vacation.

New Mexico State Police noted that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash and that seat belts were properly worn. An investigation continues.
