Young Montgomery firefighter enters water to aid man trapped in car

MONTGOMERY — A young Montgomery firefighter made a brazen move to aid a man Wednesday afternoon when a car slid off the road and entered a river.

Firefighter Miles McMinn, an 18-year-old high school senior, has already accomplished a lot in his young life.

Before his 18th birthday, McMinn had already successfully completed the state firefighters training course, medical first responder training and dive team training as a cadet firefighter.

On Dec. 31, 2022, McMinn graduated from cadet status to become a full-fledged firefighter, although he's still a senior at Reading High School.

On Wednesday afternoon, McMinn and his parents were returning home from having breakfast in Coldwater when they noticed tracks leading off the roadway down towards a river just inside the village of Montgomery.

They stopped and confirmed someone was in the vehicle. McMinn entered the three-foot-deep water and was able to get into the backseat of the vehicle where he began rendering aid until other first responders arrived.

The crash occurred on McCollum Street near Moonlot Street in the village of Montgomery, according to the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office who identified the driver as 80-year-old Robert Jerry May of Hillsdale.

May was traveling eastbound on McCollum Street when he lost control, ran off the roadway, and entered the waterway.

He was complaining of chest and leg pain and was transported to Hillsdale Hospital by Reading Emergency Unit. The Montgomery Fire Department, Camden Fire Department and First Call Towing assisted on the scene.
