Young victim of Greenwich house fire identified by coroner's office

GREENWICH − Eight-year-old Linda Anabelle-Tammie Garay of Greenwich died in a house fire on Saturday, June 3, according to a representative of the Huron County Coroner's Office.

Dr. Jeffery Harwood confirmed the child's identity Wednesday.

Greenwich is on the southern end of Huron County, near both Richland and Ashland counties.

"This incident is tragic and devastating to the involved family, community and first responders," Patrick Fox, chief of the Greenwich Police Department, said Monday in a news release.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Investigators from the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office have taken over the investigation.

Fire and Explosion Investigation Bureau looking into fire's cause

In an email Wednesday, fire marshal's public information officer Andy Ellinger confirmed it is an open case with the office's Fire and Explosion Investigation Bureau.

"The exact cause of the fire is currently undetermined," he said in the email. "No other details to share at this time."

Linda's parents are Krista Lewis and Juan Garay, according to an obituary posted by Eastman Funeral Home. The child was an always-smiling beacon of love and hope, who gave everyone hugs and enjoyed baseball and school at South Central, where she had just finished second grade. She was a people person, who loved her brothers, animals and “Stranger Things,” according to the obituary.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Eastman Funeral Home, Greenwich, where a funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. George Mays officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwich Greenlawn Cemetery.
