Young woman distraught over older sister’s ‘messed up’ babysitting request: ‘Petty and manipulative’

A young woman finally stood up to her big sister thanks to some help from Reddit.

The 20-year-old explained her difficult situation on Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum. She has been her niece’s babysitter for over a year, but her big sister refuses to pay her. Not only does this require her to skip work some days to babysit, but to make matters worse, her sister is a stay-at-home mom and could be home with the child if she chose to be.

“My niece is a year and a half old and I’ve been my sister’s only babysitter since she was born,” she explained. “In the past week, I’ve babysat for five days. And it’s not just for an hour… Yesterday I was there from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. I haven’t been home for more than a few hours (not sleeping) in days. She made me get somebody to cover my shift at work today so I could babysit and does this often. She doesn’t allow me to eat any food at her house but I’m also not allowed to take my niece in the car, so my only option is to order delivery, which can get expensive. My sister is a stay at home mom. She asks me to babysit while she has appointments [and] if she wants to go out with her husband or if she wants to go see friends.”

The most her sister has ever paid her was $40. When the Reddit poster demanded $10 an hour, the big sister ended their relationship completely.

“She pulled the ‘you’re her aunt’ card and said, ‘you didn’t ask to be paid, you demanded,'” the poster said. “At this point, I kinda lost my s*** and told her everything I have wanted to say for years and she said, ‘We’re done. Delete my number.’ Done. Thank you everyone for all your advice. While it sucks she reacted this way, I’m extremely proud of myself for finally sticking up for myself after 20 years. If she wants to be petty and manipulative by saying then she can be my guest.”

Reddit users thought the sister was being exploitative.

“That’s messed up! She doesn’t appreciate you at all” someone commented.

“You are being heavily taken advantage of,” a user commented.

“You are literally paying to watch her kid if you are booking off of work to babysit for free,” another said.
